Gelatin Bubbles

This is the recipe I use to make gelatin bubbles as decorations for cakes. They're much easier than they look! (See also the video tutorial: "Making Gelatin Bubbles/Balls")
INGREDIENTS
- 4 tablespoons Water (59 ml)
- 2 tablespoons Powdered Gelatin Mix (17 grams or 0.6 oz)
- 3 Water Balloons (one batch will cover just a few balloons)
INSTRUCTIONS
Blow up your water balloons with air (no water) and tie them off.
Attach them with tape to popsicle sticks and let them hang from the side of a styro dummy cake.
Mix your powdered gel color into the gelatin powder if you're coloring the bubbles.
In a microwave safe, deep bowl, pour the water over top of the gelatin powder and stir. Make sure the width of your bowl will fit your water balloons easily.
Put the mixture in the microwave for 15-25 seconds, until it's completely mixed and relatively smooth. (Though it's very hard to avoid all air bubbles.)
Dip your balloons, one at a time, into the mixture, making sure to cover the entire balloon and letting the excess drip off.
Repeat the previous step for a second coat for each balloon. (You can even add a third coat if you'd like, though it's not needed.) If the gelatin mixture starts to get too thick, pop it back into the microwave for 10 seconds to heat it up again.
Let the balloons dry for at least 24 hours while stuck in the styro dummy. They should not be tacky at all once dry. They should be stiff. (Some balloons, depending upon how many coats and how thick the coats are, may need more time to completely dry.)
Once dry, use scissors to cut a hole around where the balloon was tied off and carefully peel the balloon away from the gelatin. Don't worry about the bubbles... they're pretty sturdy!
NOTES
See the gelatin bubbles cake project post to see a video on how this is done.
