Prepping the cake for the buttercream painting...
Bake and Create cake tier
Torte & fill two 8” round cake tiers and stack them with supports to create one single, double-barrel tier (at least 8” tall-though mine will be 10” tall) and then ice the tier with buttercream

Video reference for creating a double barrel and icing the double barrel cake with buttercream- the beginning of the Fault line Cake WITH Buttercream Stripes, and Building a Double Barrel Tier cake tutorial
Cover with fondant - Video reference for covering a double barrel with fondant (Part 2, timestamp 27:20)
I recommend covering the cake/tier in fondant but you can choose to NOT cover the double barrel with fondant and leave it with a buttercream finish instead.
NOTE: If you choose to not cover in fondant, the technique will be slightly trickier and you must then let the finished tier (covered in an all-butter based buttercream) sit in the freezer for an hour before painting the fall scene on it.
Create your buttercream colors
Video tutorial to get the specific buttercream colors needed for this project is up in the video section next to the painting video.
(We’ll be using, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, pink, brown, white and black gel colors for this project as well as some powder, titanium dioxide (any brand will do, and it will help to have black cocoa powder as well.)
I don’t foresee an issue with using any buttercream recipe you’d like for this project (as long as it’s not too thin), but I do recommend and have used myself for the painting, the Super Easy Meringue Buttercream recipe
Wafer paper leaves and chocolate spheres
Video tutorial to making the wafer paper leaves for this project is up in the video section next to the painting video.
Video reference to make the chocolate ball toppers
And I added edible gold leaf to one of the chocolate balls after I formed it, by just touching the gold to the surface of the ball. I didn’t use anything to attach it which gave it a more rustic look, but if you’d like a more solid, even look, you can brush the ball with piping gel before you attach the gold leaf.
